Can Seagate FreeAgent and OneTouch drives be used on Windows 2003 and 2008 servers?

FreeAgent and OneTouch products are not supported on Windows 2003 Server or Windows 2008 Server. This article explains.

The FreeAgent and OneTouch products are not supported on Windows 2003 server or Windows 2008 server.

The reason for this is because retail external drives are designed to work specifically with client-based systems (e.g.,Windows Vista, Windows XP, MacOS). Server backup software is usually very expensive, much more than the price of an external drive.  If the USB ports on the server have not been disabled and if no policy has been configured to prevent the connection of one of these products then backups can still be performed to the external drive using copy and paste or an appropriate server backup software that supports USB drives. The software included with the drive will not work on a server and the drives were not tested for use in that environment.
