How to Set Up Your PS4 External Hard Drive

Let’s take a look at how to find the right hard drive for expanding your PS4 storage and optimizing your load and boot up speeds.

Table of Contents

Just Plug It In

  1. Connect the USB 3.0 cable to one of your console’s USB ports (doesn’t matter which one)
  2. You’ll see a message in your screen’s corner letting you know a device has been found. Once you see this, from your home screen, click Settings
  3. Scroll down to Devices and then to USB Storage Devices and you’ll see that the PS4 has automatically detected the Game Drive.
  4. Click on the drive and then select “Format As Extended Storage”
  5. Follow the prompts—and you’re done!

Enjoy the Magic of Matching Firmware

We could have just made a game drive and called it good. But we went the extra step and actually partnered with PlayStation so that we could engineer PS4 extended storage with features that make a difference, like matching PlayStation firmware (available only on 2TB). So because your game drive and your console run on the same kind of technology, gameplay is seamless—as if you were playing straight from your console’s internal drive.

Take Your PS4 External Storage Anywhere

Whether you’re headed to cousin Joe’s for the annual holiday get together or just popping over to a friend’s place, Game Drive for PlayStation makes it easy to hang out and connect. Simply plug into their console and load your drive onto it.
