Troubleshooting

Customer EDI Messages are received but rejected by Seagate
If your EDI messages are being rejected by Seagate, the Seagate Support Team will be able to tell you why. In addition, you should also look at any error messages created by either your EDI translator or communications software, or ask your VAN provider if the messages were sent to Seagate successfully.

Customer EDI Messages are not being received
The first step is to ensure that the transaction was executed by the backend system and that an EDI message was created. Did the EDI translation fail?  Was there a communication or VAN issue?  Please check that your setups are correct, particularly the EDI partner IDs and qualifiers.

Customer systems are rejecting EDI messages from Seagate
Check that your setups are correct, especially the EDI partner IDs and qualifiers, and report any errors to Seagate.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much money can I save by doing business electronically?
Investment costs depend on whether a company decides to outsource their eBusiness infrastructure, or install and manage it in-house.   A report from 2008 showed that the average paper order costs a company $37.45 in North America, $42.90 in EMEA, and $23.90 in APAC.  With an electronic order, costs were reduced to $23.83 in North America, $34.05 in EMEA, and $14.78 in APAC.

How long has EDI been around?
EDI has allowed companies to electronically trade documents for over 30 years.  In addition to being a very mature technology, EDI is a long-established communication solution in many companies.  EDI continues to evolve and serves as an effective and efficient mode of document exchange between companies, and will be around for many years to come.

Is EDI implementation difficult?
It depends upon the type of solution chosen.  Utilizing more complex systems often requires that EDI software be installed on your company's network.  This allows for EDI integration with your company's back-end systems.  As you begin trading with more partners and you experience business growth, your EDI system will grow in complexity.  As such, an EDI system is an evolving solution.  Most companies find the investment made in EDI worthwhile.

Is it possible to outsource EDI in the same way as other IT services?
Just as with other forms of IT technology, outsourcing EDI services to a company that has the needed resources to manage your EDI requirements is possible.  There are many EDI outsourcing companies around that will provide comprehensive support for your EDI requirements, from recruiting partners to build trading companies, to developing maps that link electronic documents together.

Can I use EDI with my other trading partners outside of Seagate?
Yes you can and it’s in your interest to do so, especially if you are investing in this system. You can use EDI with your other trading partners to create orders, send and receive invoices, and a host of other business transactions. Once you see how beneficial EDI is, you’ll want to use it as much as possible.

Can I send order changes using EDI?
Yes. Seagate is capable of receiving and processing your change orders via EDI.  For example, if you want to change the quantity or date of a line item on an order, or even cancel the order altogether, simply send an EDI change order message and it will be processed automatically.

Can I still use SOLO to see my order status?
Yes you can. The SOLO system will allow you to see your order status, even though you created an EDI Order.   You can see a summary of your orders in SOLO on the Orders tab on Seagate Direct, as well as use the search functionality to find a specific order.

What is AS2?
AS2 (Applicability Statement 2) is the draft specification standard by which vendor applications communicate EDI or other business-to-business data (such as XML) over the Internet using HTTP, a standard used by the World Wide Web.  AS2 provides security for the transport payload through digital signatures and data encryption, and ensures reliable, non-reputable delivery through the use of receipts.

What is a VAN?
A Value-Added Network (VAN) is a hosted service that acts as an intermediary between business partners sharing standards-based or proprietary data via shared business processes.  The offered service is referred to as "value-added network service".

What is Rosettanet?
RosettaNet is an independent, self-funded, non-profit , rapidly growing consortium (including SAP, Intel, Dell, PeopleSoft, 3COM) founded in 1998. It is dedicated to the development and deployment of an XML-based, standard eBusiness interface for the IT industry.  It seeks to rectify misalignments in the supply chain, made more urgent by the new digital economy, by establishing efficient business process interfaces between supply-chain trading partners.  These interfaces enable trading partners to exchange information and execute business transactions more efficiently.  Rosettanet uses Partner Interface Processes (PIPs), which are the equivalent of the EDI Business Transaction.
