Using your Pocket Hard Drive with a Windows system

How to plug in and begin using the drive

Windows XP/2000/Me

To plug in the drive to a computer running Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows Me, uncoil the USB cable from the Pocket Hard Drive and plug it in to one of your computer's USB ports.

When the USB cable is connected properly (and your computer is on) a light appears in the center of the Pocket Hard Drive. This light indicates that the Pocket Hard Drive is receiving power and is ready to use.

If this light does not come on and your Pocket Hard Drive isn't recognized by your operating system, please refer to the Questions and Answers section for things you can do to resolve the problem.

To see the files on the drive, double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop. You will see your Pocket Hard Drive represented with the default "Removable Disk" label. After the system detects the drive, the light in the center of the drive becomes a drive activity indicator. This means the light will flicker on and off when your computer is accessing the drive.

Caution. Do not unplug the drive when the light is on or blinking. Doing so may result in data corruption or lost data. Seagate is not responsible for lost data.

Windows 98SE

To plug in the drive to a computer running Windows 98SE, uncoil the USB cable from the Pocket Hard Drive and plug it in to one of your computer's USB ports.

When you connect the drive to your computer for the first time, Windows 98SE displays the Add New Hardware wizard. This means the wizard needs to find the USB drivers included on the Seagate Utility CD provided with this drive. You only have to install drivers the first time you use the drive on your Windows 98SE system. After that, your operating system will recognize the drive automatically each time you plug in the drive.

Follow these steps to install the drivers:

  1. Insert the Seagate Utility CD in your computer's CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click the Next button. The wizard displays a screen with two options.
  3. Select the Search for the best driver for your device option. The wizard displays four check boxes.
  4. Select the CD-ROM and Specify location options. Locate the drivers in the Driver directory.
  5. Click the Next button. The wizard installs the appropriate drivers on your computer and tells you when it has finished.
  6. Click the Finish button to complete the installation.
  7. Your new drive is ready to use.

When the USB cable is connected properly (and your computer is on) a light briefly appears in the center of the Pocket Hard Drive. This light indicates that the Pocket Hard Drive is receiving power and is ready to use.
