A 4.7GB DVD can be written or played at a maximum rate of 22MB/s (in about 6 minutes). As it’s a new technology developed to store higher capacities, this first generation Blu-ray drive allows a 25GB BD disc to be written or played at 9MB/s (in around 45 minutes). Subsequent generations of Blu-ray drives and discs will have increased play and write speeds.
